we don't retire 60 plus people....':mamata banerjee amid question

Amid the ongoing senior-junior debate in West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress, Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that her government does not retire people after the age of 60, but rather re-employs them based on their capabilities.

The statements were made by her in the state's Gangasagar area, where she was introducing senior government bureaucrats to local political leaders.

"We don't retire 60 plus people, rather we employ them based on their efficiency. That is why a rare incident happened where we had 3 Chief Secretaries. Two just retired and (BP) Gopalika is the new Chief Secretary. We have been able to bring them all together in one place. This is a big achievement for our government," she said.

The TMC supremo made the comments in connection with the state's bureaucracy. However, the comments gained weight as they came days after her nephew and party MP, Abhishek Banerjee, hinted at supporting the idea of an age limit in politics.

"Many are saying there's a fight between old and new leaders. I want to say All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) is united, (and is) led by Hon'ble CM and Chairperson (Mamata Banerjee). If she gives me any responsibility for '24, I will.

However, she is swiftly running the party currently," Abhishek Banerjee had stated at a rally in the state's Diamond Harbour.

"It's a fact that once people reach a certain age, their productivity reduces. What you could have done at 30, you can't do at 56. With Didi, all the senior and junior leaders are standing firm. If I am given any role, I will definitely take it," he added.
